What is Solar Decathlon / Middle East 2018 ?
Created by the initiative of the US Department of Energy in 2002, the solar decathlon is a multi-disciplinary international competition combining architecture, engineering and technological innovation.
The competition invites universities from all the globe to join in the adventure, and offers an opportunity for the students to conceive, design, build and operate a grid-connected solar powered house.
For a period of 2 years, the participants of the 20 teams will have to fulfill the challenge of developing a fully functional prototype house of 100 square metres. The houses must use solar energy as the only energy source and are equipped with all the technologies that permit maximum energy efficiency.
During the final phase of the competition teams assemble their houses in a main expo area, open to the general public, while undergoing the 10 contests of the competition, reason for which this event is called Decathlon. (‘Deca’ derives from Greek and means ten).
The very first edition of the Solar Decathlon took place in Washington DC in 2002 and previous additions have been organized in different areas including the U.S, Europe and China.
Today, we are witnessing the Solar Decathlon 2018 Middle East edition that was created through an agreement signed between Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the Department of Energy of the United States of America, in June 2015, in order to organize a sustainable solar houses competition in 2018 in Dubai.
The SDME 2018 organizational goal is to contribute to the knowledge of solar and sustainable housing and has 3 key objectives:
SDME offers the youth a unique opportunity to be a part of a change that is going to affect every single generation. They will learn team work, they will learn communication skills and they will learn collaboration. More importantly they will learn to coexist with other fellow global citizens in one neighborhood.
ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION
“The solar decathlon is designed to develop leaders who want to be in the driver’s seat, smart, innovative, creative people who can drive the innovation and lead the way”
“Since we started in 2002 it helped educate 120 teams, nearly 20 000 students”
“I created a competition to recruit thousands of motivated creative minds with the goal of convincing people that solar electricity is the best way to power our houses.”
“We believed that converting sun light into electricity was the greatest invention of the 20th century. But that won’t come true unless people use it”
“Every investment in the development of clean energy sources is at the same time an investment to protect the environment for future generations”
